The Skill the Pilates Boom Isn’t Teaching

We’ve spent decades in the teaching room, and lately we’ve noticed something worth naming. Pilates is booming, studios are opening everywhere, and newly certified instructors are entering the industry faster than we’ve ever seen.

That growth is genuinely exciting. It also means a quality gap is quietly opening up.

Where the Gap Shows

Certificates and logged hours tell you someone completed a course. They tell you very little about what happens when a real client walks in carrying a stiff shoulder, a stressful week, and a body that refuses to follow yesterday’s plan.

The instructors who thrive in those moments share one thing: awareness. They read the room, they see the person in front of them, and they pivot on the spot instead of mechanically delivering a session plan.

If you’ve ever trained with someone like that, you’ll know the feeling. The session seems built around you, because it is.

Between Taught and Cultivated

Here’s the honest part: awareness sits in an awkward place. You can’t hand it over in a weekend workshop, and you can’t simply wait for it to arrive with experience either.

It’s a perceptual skill, and in our experience, it grows when someone deliberately cultivates it. That means observing skilled teachers, teaching under thoughtful feedback, and learning to trust what your eyes and hands are telling you about a moving body.

Think of it like match fitness. Drills prepare you, yet the real sharpening happens in live sessions with real people.

What We’ve Been Doing All Along

Our tutors bring over 75 years of combined experience, and cultivating this capacity has been at the heart of our teaching long before it became the industry conversation.

So here’s the pattern we keep returning to: the boom will keep producing certificates, awareness will keep separating good instructors from memorable ones, and the teachers who invest in that perceptual skill will be the ones clients seek out for years.

One or two spaces left. Then the door closes.

The PROGRESSIVE Pilates Mat course at BODYFIRM Studios runs 24th to 27th September 2026, and it’s nearly full.

I keep coming back to the tutors when I think about why.

Second-generation Pilates Master Trainers. 75 years of tutoring experience between them. That’s not a number you find on many course pages and honestly no other training school in Ireland can say that!

What you’ll actually work through:

1. Current biomechanics, taught properly, with the why behind every cue
2. Breath work that connects to function, not just choreography
3. Classical and contemporary Mat side by side

The way Joseph would have taught it, is how they describe it. I’d say the way he’d have taught it if he had today’s understanding of movement. That’s the interesting bit for me.

If you’ve been feeling like your training gave you the exercises but not the reasoning, this is the room where that gets fixed.

Four days. September 2026. A seat or two still open.

I’m here if you’d like the details, just send me a message and I’ll walk you through what the four days look like – or call BODYFRIM at 01 8684600.

#Pilatestraining #Pilateseducation #Pilatesmatwork #Pilatesreformer

Nobody talks about what 40 years actually builds.

You can read it in a bio. But you can’t feel it until you’re on the mat or reformer.

The Pilates industry is loud right now.

And the thing is, most of it looks the same from the outside.

But something different happens when you’ve spent 40 years inside this work, and 30 of those years teaching students.

Here’s what those years actually build:

1) Pattern recognition you can’t shortcut. After thousands of bodies, you stop guessing why a shoulder isn’t tracking. You just know.

2) The instinct to slow down. Time teaches you the cue you don’t give is often the one that lands.

3) A library of mistakes. I’ve gotten it wrong in more ways than I can count. Each one rewired how I teach the next person.

4) Knowing when not to teach. Sometimes the body in front of you needs rest, not repetition.

5) Standards that don’t bend. No need to reinvent, when you’ve witnessed what good work the Pilates System can do over decades.

This is what credibility actually is. The quiet confidence that comes from having been wrong enough times to recognise right.

If you’ve ever walked into a course and felt the difference without being able to name it, that’s what you were feeling.

It’s why our academy teaches the way it does. Not because we read it in a manual. It’s because we’ve lived inside the work long enough for it to live inside us.

Forty years doesn’t make you louder.

It makes you certain.

And you can feel that the moment your course begins.

Navigating the Noise in the Modern Pilates Industry

The Pilates industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, and Ireland is no exception. Studios are expanding rapidly, reformer classes are selling out worldwide, and demand for qualified instructors continues to rise. Industry surveys show that Pilates teaching has become one of the fastest-growing sectors within movement and wellness education.

With this growth, however, has come a great deal of “noise” within the industry — debates over who teaches the “best” method, who has the “most authentic” approach, and which training programme is considered superior. Social media, branding, and marketing can often blur the lines between genuine educational depth and commercial popularity.

For someone considering a career in Pilates instruction, it is important to look beyond trends, personalities, and polished online content. A strong Pilates education should be grounded in the Pilates system, experience, professionalism, and a genuine passion for movement and teaching.

When choosing a Pilates teacher training programme, prospective instructors should look for:

  • Trainers with many years of practical industry experience
  • Highly qualified and educated educators with multidisciplinary backgrounds
  • Education in Pilates as a system
  • Degree-based or clinically informed movement education
  • Evidence of thousands of successful graduates and long-standing industry reputation
  • Strong testimonials and professional recommendations from former students
  • Small group training environments with high trainer-to-student ratios
  • Comprehensive anatomy, biomechanics, and movement analysis education
  • Mentorship and ongoing support beyond certification
  • Trainers who have spent years learning from, working with, and being mentored by respected industry professionals

The reality is that great Pilates teachers are rarely created through fast-track training alone. Depth of knowledge develops over years of observation, teaching, continued study, and practical experience.

While the industry continues to evolve, students should seek educators who value quality over quantity and who remain committed to the true principles of movement, critical thinking, and professional development.

In an industry full of noise, experience, integrity, and educational depth will always stand out.

PROGRESSIVE Pilates Academy – A testimonial is a valuable gift.

A testimonial is one of the most valuable gifts a student can give a training course. It not only helps future students feel confident in choosing the right learning experience, but also allows us to continue growing, improving, and sharing our passion for movement education with others.

Your words may inspire someone else to begin their own Pilates journey

And that’s a wrap!
Plenty of learning, plenty of laughs, and definitely a few moments of realising how much detail goes into great movement coaching.
I’m leaving with a completely different appreciation for movement quality, flow, cueing and control.
Excited to keep refining my coaching and bring this into my classes and client work.
Back to being a student for a few days and honestly loved every minute of it.
It’s reminded me that good coaching is never finished evolving.
Very grateful for the patience, attention to detail and passion Joyce and Emma of the PROGRESSIVE Pilates Academy, brought to every session.
Now time to practice, refine and keep building.
Safe to say the open leg rocker humbled me 😅

Pilates Jump Board- Learn the difference between Devant & Entrechat, and much more!

The Pilates Jump Board offers a dynamic and highly effective approach to movement training, combining cardiovascular conditioning with precision, control, and functional strength. Rooted in both Pilates principles and dance technique, Jump Board training develops what movement professionals describe as “distal mobility with proximal stability” — allowing freedom and agility in the limbs while maintaining core stability and alignment.

This intensive one-day Certificate Course, led by Dance and Pilates professional trainer Kyra Todd Hons BFA [York University, Canada], explores the relationship between movement quality, rhythm, and conscious body control.

Participants will learn the technical distinctions between classical dance movements such as Devant and Entrechat, as well as the mechanics of First, Second, Third & Fourt positions, and how these principles translate directly into Jump Board training.

The course emphasises concentration, control, flow, and rhythm, encouraging participants to move with awareness and precision. Every jump requires the body and mind to work together, making subtle adjustments from moment to moment. What works for a professional dancer, instructor, or client one day may not be appropriate the next — highlighting the importance of adaptability, observation, and intelligent movement practice.

With 80% of the course dedicated to practical training, participants should be prepared for a physically engaging and enjoyable learning experience. This course is ideal for Pilates instructors, dancers, movement educators, seeking to deepen their understanding of dynamic movement training while refining technique, coordination, and body awareness.

The Silent theft of mobility

Here’s what I’ve observed about mobility loss—it’s gradual, silent, and most of us don’t notice until we’ve lost significant range. You stop reaching for things on high shelves. You turn your whole body instead of just your head when reversing the car. You struggle to get up from the floor without using your hands. These aren’t dramatic moments. They’re quiet accommodations you make without conscious thought.

The fitness industry doesn’t talk much about this because it’s not exciting. There’s no before-and-after photo that captures “I can now tie my shoes without holding my breath.” But these are the movements that determine your quality of life as you age. Activities of daily living—the unglamorous, essential tasks that either remain effortless or become increasingly difficult depending on how you’ve moved throughout your life.

Pilates addresses this through what I think of as movement medicine. The practice offers resistance for strength, postural work for alignment, mobility exercises for fluid movement, and breathing patterns that underpin everything else. It’s not about building impressive muscles. It’s about building a body that serves you reliably, day after day, year after year.

People Hiking” by Ales Krivec/ CC0 1.0

Number #1?

Everyone in the Pilates industry seems to be claiming they’re number one right now. It’s become background noise—the kind that makes people tune out rather than lean in.

We’ve been doing this as a studio [Bodyfirm Studios] and educator [PROGRESSIVE Pilates Academy] for 30+ years. Not because we’re shouting about being the best, but because we’ve learnt something fundamental along the way—something that only reveals itself when you’ve spent decades working through the messy, complicated reality of real bodies and real people. That certificate you earn at the beginning? It’s just the door opening, not the qualification itself.

The Certificate Opens the Door,

Here’s the pattern we’ve observed over six decades of combined experience: getting your Pilates certification feels like the finish line when you’re working towards it, but it’s actually just the starting gate.

You study, you pass, you get that certificate in your hands—and then you meet your first real client / class, and everything you thought you knew shifts beneath you.

Because once there’s an actual body in front of you—with its own history, its limitations, its goals, its resistance and its hope—you realise this is genuinely tough. There’s so much to take care of, so many variables you didn’t account for in training, so much emotional and physical nuance that no textbook quite prepared you for. That’s the moment most new instructors hit the wall, and it’s also the moment the real education begins.

The certificate gives you permission to start. What happens after that—the failures, the adjustments, the slow accumulation of pattern recognition—that’s where actual capability gets built. And you need to be prepared for that!

Pilates Keeps Evolving, and So Do We

The biggest insight here at the PROGRESSIVE Pilates Academy, we’ve gathered over the years? Pilates isn’t a fixed system you master once and tick off your list—it’s constantly evolving, shifting as new research emerges and as you understand more about how bodies actually respond to movement. If you think you’re fully qualified the day you finish your training, you’re setting yourself up for a difficult wake-up call.

This is a forever career if you approach it properly, built on continuous learning, ongoing adaptation, and the kind of genuine experience that only comes from working with real people over years. It’s not radical transformation we’re talking about here—it’s slow, compound growth that strengthens your capability incrementally, session by session, year by year.

That’s what 60 years of combined experience has taught us—not that we’re number one, but that we’re still learning, still adjusting, still discovering patterns we didn’t see a decade ago.

And when you’re trusting someone with your body or your education, that ongoing commitment to growth matters far more than any marketing claim ever could.

We were the first studio and educator in Ireland, and we’re still here, still evolving. PROGRESSIVE Pilates Academy at Bodyfirm Studios, Dublin.
